Top Up TV – is the only broadcaster in the UK offering pay TV subscriptions to supplement Freeview channels on a DVB-T service. Launched in March 2004, it offers additional premium channels on an ‘on demand’ subscription basis (i.e. no annual contract), from content providers such as SKY Sports, ESPN, and NBCUniversal through PictureBox Movies. Top Up TV can be received by DVB-T DVR set-top box with a built-in card slot for Top Up TV, or a TV with a built-in card slot via a CI+ CAM adaptor.
As a new service, it was important for Top Up TV that from the start the correct operations and processes were put in place, to allow for the planned growth of the business. It required a partner with both the technical and operational experience to take on a proactive role.
The channel launch faced many demanding and challenging issues from the start, such as legacy equipment, multiple service offerings, physical set top box and viewing card distribution, sophisticated discounting and customer acquisition and support. Those challenges were met through effective project management and collaboration between Paywizard, NAGRA who provided the broadcast stream, and Top Up TV.

These included Paywizard installing a server and interface with the encryption software into their own operation, thereby operating a successful broadcast encryption system on the UK DTT platform on Top Up TV’s behalf.
